As a reminder, our Xela Aid reunion is coming up September 29th. If you're a
participant of the most recent trip this summer, a prior trip, or are just
interested in the project, we invite you to come celebrate (see details in the
Calendar section - your RSVP is requested).
We hope you are enjoying your summer, and look forward to updating
you with more exciting news.

(At Left) PEX graduate Juana Gomez Lopez will serve as the first
instructor at Xela Aid's new "Centro de Estudios"
The challenges of receiving an education are especially difficult in
Guatemalan villages like San Martín, where money is scarce and children
are often needed to work in the fields or tend to siblings. Illiteracy
rates reach 80%.
In San Martín, many children who do have the opportunity to be in school
struggle because they speak Mám in their home, rather than Spanish which is
spoken in school. Parents often cannot read and are unable to assist with
studies, and there is limited access to textbooks and school supplies.
El Centro de Estudios (Study Center) being launched this summer provides the
children of San Martín with a comfortable, safe place to study, read, do their
homework, and talk with one another about books and ideas. With donations and
small grants, we have begun to furnish the Study Center and have purchased
school texts and materials.
Of course, to make the study center complete, we must also fund the
instructor who supervises the room and assists the children. The chosen
instructor -- a young woman whose education was supported through PEX ("Proyecto
Educativo de Xela Aid"), the Xela Aid tuition program -- recently graduated with
a teaching certificate. Juana Lopez Gomez reads and writes both Spanish and Mám,
knows the children in the village, and wants to work with us to develop programs
whereby the children can work with one another and can use El Centro de Estudios
to its fullest advantage.
We thank the following individuals who have generously sponsored the launch
of El Centro de Estudios, so far:
The Ehlers Family (room sponsor)
John and Carol Dickensen (library sponsors)
Sponsors, so far, of teacher and supplies:
Leslie C. Baer
Maury and Helen Basile
Ellen Caldwell
Elizabeth Fontaine

We understand how easily our hearts (and wallets) can get pulled in many
important directions. We hope that this project may touch you, and we
invite you to send any contributions that you are able (one-time or
annual gifts) to provide a salary for the instructor and to assist with
additional books and supplies. At the time of this mailing, we are less
than $700 away from having funding on hand for a full year!
Checks should be made out to Xela Aid, with "El Centro de Estudios" indicated
n the memo line of the check, and mailed to: Sheryl Fontaine English Department
California State University, Fullerton Fullerton, CA 92834. (Soon, you will be
able to make a contribution specific to El Centro de Estudios online.)

At the end of last year we told you about "GoodSearch," and how you can
support Xela Aid each time you do a web search.
If you haven't had a chance yet, go to Goodsearch and select Xela Aid as your
benefactor organization:
http:// www.goodsearch.com. Find where it asks, "Who do you GoodSearch for?"
Type in Xela Aid, and Xela Aid should appear each time you search as your
default benefactor organization.
If you want to be sure you GoodSearch for Xela Aid each time, you can set
your home page to GoodSearch in your browser's Preferences. Each time you
search, Xela Aid will receive one cent -- and every penny counts!
Tell friends and family about GoodSearch and how they can support Xela Aid's
important work, and who knows how much we could raise by the end of the year!
Remember, just about $2,000 will keep the clinic open an entire month.
SUPPORT ONE OF THESE IMPORTANT PROJECTS NOW
JUNE RUSSEL-GLENNON CLINIC AND COMMUNITY CENTER
Serving more than 200 clients each month, the clinic is now equipped
with an ultrasound machine, thanks to an annonymous donor who came to
assist Xela Aid through
Direct Relief International (DRI). Special thanks to that generous
donor and DRI.
KCO Club
members will be proud to know that during 2006, the Clinic served more than 2400
people -- most of whom, otherwise, would not have had the resources to see a
doctor. This year is off to a great start with attendance increasing.
You can help keep this community clinic fully staffed and open daily by becoming
a KCO Club member -- "Keep the Clinic Open"
NOW!.
PEX DISTRIBUTION, NEW SPONSORSHIPS, HOPEFULS
This summer, scholarship funds were delivered to more than 60 sponsored
children who had dutifully completed their semester, some, under
extremely difficult circumstances. So far, nine children and young
adults have been sponsored by participants in this year's Xela Aid trip
to Guatemala. (See details,
July newsletter)<a/ >

URGENT ACTION: SAN MARTÍN TOTS PRESCHOOL IN NEED...
The "San Martín Tots" preschool ("guardaria") opened in January has
served an average of 34 children aged 3 to 6 each school day. A teacher
and three assistants tutor the mostly Mám- speaking children in Spanish,
reading, writing, and local history, and serve a hot meal for lunch.
Xela Aid has intermittently contributed funds, furnishings, and supplies, and
thanks to a donor's generosity, contributed a kitchen. However, the government
grant that funds daily operations may end in December. All operations total $650
per month.
Anyone interested in supporting ongoing operations, who knows of a potential
source of funding or who would be interested in leading a grant writing effort
is encouraged to contact Xela Aid at xela_aid@earthlink.net
SAN MARTÍN CLEAN
The program to install 30 permanent trash cans around town got off to a
great start with the first one being cemented in front of Xela Aid's
clinic to much fanfare. The 18 cans sponsored so far have now been
installed and are being serviced regularly by community teams.
Many thanks to those who have sponsored trash cans so far!
