“The guarantee of safety in a battering relationship can never be based upon
a promise from the perpetrator, no matter how heartfelt. Rather, it must be based upon
the self-protective capability of the victim. Until the victim has developed
a detailed and realistic contingency plan and has demonstrated
her ability to carry it out, she remains in danger of repeated abuse.”
—Therapist Judith Lewis Herman,
from "Trauma and Recovery: The Aftermath of Violence"
Because we know that investments in women are especially effective, we have a special focus on empowering women. In support of that
focus, Xela AID employs a full time therapist who, among her specialties, counts domestic violence prevention and survivors support.
Xela AID’s therapist sees patients each day, and additionally, holds workshops focused on various aspects of self esteem building and home safety, including de-escalating violence.
The therapy and ongoing support our therapist provides is additionally designed to help each victim develop her or his "detailed and realistic contingency plan" (from the quote above), and to empower her or him to carry it out.
This component of Xela AID’s health care program directly impacts approximately 1300 women, children and families every 12 months.
